Barriers

After an emotionally and mentally draining 12-14 years of mandatory schooling, not many students have it in them to endure the years of university required to pursue their dream career.

“I feel like I’ve already wasted so many years in school, I don’t want to waste anymore.” said Jashaunica Simon, a senior with hopes of being a clinical psychologist.

The only thing holding Jashaunica back is the many years of higher education she’ll need, which will also be very expensive. She’s not sure if the journey is worth the destination.

Armani Jones, another senior, is willing to go to the ends of the earth to pursue her goals. Literally.

Armani dreams of being a travel blogger, “I want to see the world and try different foods, ya know? I just want to make money doing it.”

Unfortunately, She doesn’t have the financial means to do any of that right now.

Her plan is to go to Culinary School and hopefully establish herself in the industry, she hopes that’ll be a way out and aid her in achieving her ultimate goal.

Junior Ja’Kari Tisdale’s worries lie on a completely different spectrum.

Ja’Kari wants to be a defense attorney, he hopes to help people who look like him on a legal level. His only concern is discrimination.

“It’s hard out here for black people in general, but darker skinned people get the shorter end of the stick. I just don’t want to end up with a racist boss or ignorant co-workers,” Tisdale said.

Ja’Kari takes law classes at the Career Center and even though he is worried, he plans to follow his dream regardless.

For William Massey, a freshman, the only thing stopping him pursuing his dream is his age; and fear of not being adequate.

“I just want to serve my country. Marines are the first ones in, and the last ones out. I want that.” Massey said.

He aspires to enlist in the Marine Corp as soon as he’s eligible and hopes he has what it takes to be one of the finest jarheads this country has ever seen.
